Baringhup: what’s in a name?

When first settlers came to this agricultural area in the early 1850s it was known as Bryant’s Crossing, as there is a ford over the Loddon River nearby. So why Baringhup? Some sources tell that signs were given by local Djaara people, which were interpreted as meaning the water (Loddon River) was flowing or ‘Bearing-up-hill’.…
