Big ideas are coming to Maldon
2 min read

TEDx, the platform that delivers powerful ideas to the world via locally curated micro-lectures streamed to a global audience, is a worldwide phenomenon. And now, Maldon will be hosting its very own.

For Paul Kooperman, hosting a local TEDx has been a long-held dream. Paul first moved to the Macedon Ranges and sought out a competitive licence to run a TEDx event in Kyneton in 2020. But like many things, COVID assured it would not go to plan. A fan of the platform as a space to share big ideas in easy-to-digest ways, Paul was determined to host a live event.

His family moved to Maldon shortly after, and on discovering the wealth of independent thinkers and incredible ideas in the region, he reapplied to curate a panel for the popular platform right here. Securing the right to host a TEDx event is not an easy process. “They make you fight for it and justify why it should be your town,” Paul says.

His application outlined why Maldon and surrounds is a dynamic and diverse community with big ideas on tech, science, sociology, psychology, and education. Ideas worth sharing with the community and, beyond that, the world. “The talks need to have a focus on the local region but also have global relevance.” And he found that in spades.

On Saturday 1 July, you can come and hear Dr Richard Mayes discuss ‘Social Prescribing’, the healthcare approach that involves linking patients with non-medical support services such as social activities or dance classes. Activities that support social, emotional and practical needs, while improving overall health and well-being.

Manue René, a genderqueer writer, journalist and storyteller, will talk about reframing the language around ‘coming out’ to create a more positive story around how we introduce ourselves. Their approach includes an understanding of the fluidity, beauty, and power of choosing to ‘how we introduce ourselves’.

While Rodney Carter, a descendant of Dja Dja Wurrung and Yorta Yorta People and a prominent voice for human rights and climate action, will give a talk titled ‘First Nations: the missing piece.’ With the many ecosystem challenges we face today, Carter says the missing piece of the system's effective function is First Nations People.

The TEDx event will ensure yet another dynamic contribution to Maldon while placing the Goldfields cultural capital squarely on the map. Each speaker talks for around 10 minutes and for something unique, between each speaker, a saxophonist will improvise a short interpretation of the talk.

TEDx Maldon is also hosting TEDx Women later this year. The women-focused event aims to bring issues of gender and equality to the table. Applications to deliver a talk are open until 1 July.

Paul is excited to facilitate events that bring people together to share big ideas and the positive impacts this will have for the whole community. Maldon’s very first TEDx is on during the Maldon in Winter Festival on Saturday 1 July. For ticket purchases or to apply for TEDx Women, head to www.tedxmaldon.com.
